Dear Ricardo: My New York Trip

Inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s letters in Dear Theo, I write letters to my future self about everyday life and events.

Dear Ricardo,

I just returned from spending the week (and all my money) in New York. Blisters cover my feet. My brown shoes aren’t meant to walk this city. But fashion isn’t always comfortable—amirite?

I visited Joe, who lives in Chinatown. He moved over a year ago. He’s been back in Chicago several times, which compelled me to take more initiative and go to New York. I also got a chance to meet up with Karlita too. During the week, I went to the American Museum of Natural History, The Met three times, the Comedy Cellar, the Bucks game in Brooklyn, the John Lennon Memorial, and several book stores. That’s in addition to hiking everywhere and eating delicious food along the way! I gotta admit, though, I’m pretty exhausted.

This was my fifth time in New York City but the first in seven years. It’s not what I remember. I didn’t feel intimidated or wide-eyed, but that I fit in. Ten years in Chicago proved good practice. The New York stereotypes are overblown. I had nothing but positive interactions and, in fact, it was me who got annoyed by all the slow-walking New Yorkers. I’m trying to see stuff, you know? Living in New York used to be an idea I had, but it no longer seems dreamy. Ideally, I’d enjoy living there in stints rather than years at a time: longer trips like this one to learn and grow inspired and motivated. My trip reminded me how much I’ve grown and how I’m comfortable with who I am.

The museums were fantastic. They’re huge! I especially enjoyed The Met; I wandered inside for three straight days. Each exhibit could be a museum itself! I’ve never heard myself say “Whoa” so many times! You gotta go back again! There’s so much more I need to see! It’s the best museum I’ve ever been too.

Gosh. There’s so much more to tell you! Above all though, I was glad to spend time with friends. I’m fortunate to have such wonderful people in my life. I loved seeing them in their new element; I hope nothing but the best for them. Make sure to keep friendship as a top priority, Ricardo.

Have you been to New York? What was your favorite thing to do and what did you think?
